Around the Whisky Coast

Many of the routes on West Coast Whisky Trail involve sea travel, are there connections to get to your final destination?

Travel in the region is well co-ordinated. Car ferry timetables connect with local public transport and there are always taxi and car hire services available from ferry terminals.

Is it advisable to book ferry travel in advance?

Yes, especially if crossing with a vehicle during the summer months when traffic volumes are at their highest. Be aware, too, that some of the small vehicle ferry routes are seasonal, and during the summer are “on demand”. This means there is no need to book ahead, just turn up and the ferry goes when there are sufficient vehicles and passengers. Always check timetable information with the ferry company before travelling.

Can I take my dog on a ferry?

Yes. In fact, most of the larger Caledonian MacBrayne vessels have areas set aside specifically for dogs and their owners. In certain areas of a ferry, such as the cafeteria and the bars, only guide dogs are permitted.

Can I book travel tickets online?

Yes. Almost all ferry, train, coach and airline companies now have secure web sites to book and purchase tickets online.

Do filling stations on the West Coast Whisky Trail sell LPG?

Virtually all filling stations in rural filling stations now have at least one LPG pump.

Which are the main airports serving the West Coast?

The main airports are Glasgow International Airport, Glasgow Prestwick International Airport and Edinburgh International Airport. Alternatively, Inverness Airport is also convenient, especially for the northern end of the trail, and has regular flights to Europe as well as many UK airports including Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton.

Is it possible to visit by private aircraft?

There are a number of small airfields that are suitable for private aircraft. It is also possible to charter light aircraft including helicopters and seaplanes.

Could I do the West Coast Whisky Trail in my yacht?

This is eminently possible. The West Coast of Scotland is one of the premier yachting areas in the UK. There are literally hundreds of small harbours to choose from and most have well-established support services for the yachting fraternity.
