Driving from Glasgow to Campbeltown, take the A82 to Tarbet, then continue on the A83 to Campbeltown (taking you through Inveraray 1 ½ hrs, Lochgilphead 2 hrs and Clachan 3hrs). Total journey time 4 hours.
Driving from Edinburgh to Campbeltown, take the A8 then M8 then A82 to Tarbet, then continue on the A83 to Campbeltown (taking you through Inveraray 2 ½ hrs, Lochgilphead 3 hrs and Clachan 4 hrs). Total journey time 5 hrs.
By Bus
Scottish Citylink buses depart Edinburgh and Glasgow for Campbeltown.
This service calls at Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Tarbert, Clachan and Kennacraig Pier.
The total journey time from Edinburgh is a little over 6 hours, and from Glasgow 4 1/2 hours.
West Coast Motors provide a comprehensive local bus service in Kintyre and Mid Argyll.
On Islay local bus services are operated to all the towns on the island by Islay Coaches and the Royal Mail Postbus. Buses meet both incoming and outgoing ferries.
Getting to the Cowal peninsula
You may wish to extend your travelling time to take in a visit to the Cowal peninsula. You can travel to Kintyre via road and ferry link using Caledonian MacBrayne’s service over the Cowal Peninsula. This involves a rail journey to Gourock and a ferry connection to Dunoon, a short drive across the Cowal peninsula for a second ferry journey from Portavadie to Tarbert.
First Scotrail run a comprehensive daily service from Glasgow to Gourock. The service departs every 30 minutes and connects with Caledonian MacBrayne’s regular ferry service to Dunoon which operates daily every 30 minutes.
